Whether you are keeping a single pair, or breeding your birds for sale,
what you feed them will make a world of difference in their health,
appearance, vitality, and success.
  • In the Wild - what do they eat?
  • Carbs - What comprises a carbohydrate for finches?
  • Protein - high-protein foods
  • Fat & Oils - yep, like us, finches need some fat in their diet!
  • Vitamin & Minerals - there are several ways to ensure they are receiving the
    proper amount
  • Grit - what is it for and why do they need it?
  • Green Stuff - the greener the better!
  • Seed - the right combination for an award winning mix!
  • egg food - also referred to as "rearing food", and occasionally, "universal food"
  • Water - the obvious stuff!
Depending on the season, I add or remove specific items from my seed mix and the
foods I offer my birds.  For my various recipes, please click the above link.
Gouldian finches are notorious for being picky eaters.  They are often overly cautious or
even afraid of new items placed in their cage.  This link will give you some ideas on how
to get them to be less afraid, and try new foods as they are introduced to their feeding
schedule!
  • Liquid vitamins
  • Dry minerals

When placing cuttlebone
in the cage, break it into
smaller pieces so that
when your birds use the
cuttlebone as a perch,
their droppings don't foul
it.  You can then replace
the cuttlebone without
having wasted a whole
piece!
